Leaving home for a year

By Letizia Torri, international student from Italy studying at Riverside Secondary School

Deciding to study in Canada was the best decision of my life! I left Italy on August 26 very early in the morning. I remember my emotions like it was yesterday, even though it actually was months ago. At the airport, I remember myself crying.Just in that moment I realized that I was going to be away from home for 310 days!

As soon as I landed in Vancouver, I already felt different. So many thoughts in my mind, accelerated heartbeat and a lot of different feelings throughout my body. When I left the airport, fear and pressure were completely gone and were replaced by excitement and desire to prove to myself that if I believe in my abilities, I can do anything.

Having said that, I secretly cried when I arrived at my new home. I lay on my bed and saw a basket full of sweets on the bedside table. There was also a balloon, shaped like a Canadian flag and a big sign that said, “Welcome to Canada and to our family.” It was a very cute surprise and I remember really appreciating that gesture.

The first days away from home were strange and unique at the same time. My host family took me to Lafarge Lake and to Golden Ears Park (the waterfalls were just amazing!) This journey gave me the opportunity to meet my Canadian family and I really had an awesome time with them!
