Northeast

Lying east of the Rocky Mountains, the Northeast is a remote area of mountains, foothills, forests, lakes, and the fertile Peace River valley.

This region is home to cities like Fort St. John, Fort Nelson, Dawson Creek, Tumbler Ridge, and Chetwynd. Its rapidly growing economy is based on natural resources, particularly natural gas production, and coal mining.

Public post-secondary institutions in this region include Northern Lights College.

Fun facts about the Northeast region

  1. Preserved footprints of three tyrannosaurs, all heading in the same direction, were discovered near Tumbler Ridge in 2011, marking the first time the footprints of more than one tyrannosaur have been found close together.

  2. Every February, energetic residents of Fort St. John gather in the heart of the city for the High On Ice Winter Festival. The event is perhaps best known for its ice carving competition, which draws talent from across the globe.

  3. During WW2 Fort Nelson served as a base for the United States Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force.
