North Coast and Nechako

Bordering the Pacific Ocean, the North Coast and Nechako region is an area of forests, mountains, and rugged coastlines. Prince Rupert, Terrace, and Kitimat are the largest cities in this region.

The North Coast and Nechako is also home to the ancient Great Bear Rainforest and the Haida Gwaii archipelago — where you’ll find one of the last authentic examples of a coastal First Nations village.

Terrace’s Coast Mountain College is a public post-secondary institution in this region.

  1. Established in 2010, the Gwaii Haanas National Park on Haida Gwaii is the first area in the world to be protected from mountain top to sea floor.

  2. The mysterious white Kermode (Spirit) bear is a black bear with a rare recessive gene found only in the Great Bear Rainforest.

  3. The wettest city in Canada is Prince Rupert. On average Prince Rupert gets more than 239 days of rain per year. And the average total rainfall in Prince Rupert is a whopping 2,593 millimeters (102 inches) per year.
