Homes in Vancouver vs. Vietnam
By Vy Dang, international student from Vietnam studying at Burnaby South Secondary School
I always enjoy hanging out with my friend in her house, since I am in love with the garden there. Visiting her place has given me more insight into the regular life of a typical family here. The garden is awesome with lots of plants and vegetables.
In Vietnam, I live in an apartment, so I always wanted to have my own garden in the house. Even though it is just a small corner, it just makes the atmosphere so peaceful and natural. My friend’s family only goes to the supermarket when they need to buy groceries that they do not have. Most of the vegetables are fresh and organic. Not only do they grow vegetables, but they also own a mango tree and a peach tree. I have had a chance to taste one of these before, and it is absolutely brilliant. They are really dedicated to their little garden.
Despite their busy work, they still spend a decent amount of time at the weekend to water the plants and ensure that they are all growing healthily. The garden is also a playground for the children. In the summer, there is a small pool and a tree house for them to relax and have fun.
When I am at their place on a weekend morning, everything is just joyful, which reminds me of my family in Vietnam. I really enjoy experiencing Canadian life through families there, since it honestly warms my heart.
